In both the Choice and the No Choice conditions, children reached into the sock with two objects originally–in the Choice condition, children chose which object they wanted, and in the No Choice condition, children were instructed which object they could pull out. In both conditions, the object in the other sock is equally novel. However, we do see a greater preference for the novel toy in the Choice condition, indicating that the act of making a choice (and not mere novelty) is responsible for the choice of the object in the other sock.
